U.S. and Chinese officials have agreed to pursue an extension of the temporary 90-day tariff truce following two days of talks in Stockholm, Sweden.
The move comes as both sides aim to ease rising trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

While no major breakthrough was achieved,
U.S. officials indicated that the final decision regarding the extension—which is set to expire on August 12—will rest with President Donald Trump.
The possibility of tariffs returning to their previous elevated levels raises concerns over global supply chains and economic growth.

Negotiations were described by both parties as constructive. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer confirmed that extending the truce for another 90 days remains on the table.
Bessent emphasized positive personal rapport and mutual respect between the parties,
noting an improved American understanding of China’s agenda—particularly in relation to the flow of rare earth minerals,
a sector dominated by Beijing.

For his part, China’s chief trade negotiator, Li Chenggang,
stated that both nations are committed to maintaining a stable economic and trade relationship.
He added that working teams will continue active engagement to reinforce this course.

Although President Trump has denied plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping soon,
analysts suggest the talks may pave the way for a possible bilateral summit later this year.

It is worth noting that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised its global growth forecast on the same day, but warned that any new escalation in tariff measures could significantly endanger those projections.
